So… the kids went off to take part in the Sydney Ice Rink Xmas Show on Friday and Saturday nights and both of them did very well. The youngest being the better skater had more of a ‘part’ but the eldest was actually on the ice for a longer period so it all balanced out nicely.
Can’t say I was 100% happy with the organisation itself… but I wasn’t sorting it out so can’t complain too much.
Essentially the ‘story’ was a few scenes of the couple of days over the Xmas period… mostly Xmas Eve and Xmas Day. It was set to music with a lot of miming and dancing and the kids seemed to really enjoy themselves, as did the audience.
It’s hard to explain in words what the ‘issues’ are so I’ll just leave them alone. All I’ll say is that a lot of us parents felt that the kids themselves were reduced to a support act for a few of the family of the organisers… and it was made all the worse because the kids who ‘starred’ in the show weren’t even regulars at this particular ice rink. Also it appeared that selection for a part was made on height not ability.
This led to anomalous situations where our best skaters were left fuming in discontent having been paired up with people who could hardly stand up on the ice safely!!
The upshot was that while it was a good show, and the kids enjoyed themselves, there were a few of us who felt it could have been *so* much better with not much additional work.
Roll on next year, maybe it’ll be better… or not. 🙂
