The daughter went off to school today with two bulging bags of books. All of them were books she’d borrowed from the school library and neglected to return. In fact she had so many on loan that they told her she wasn’t allowed any more until the outstanding ones were all returned.
Luckily, as a school resource, no fines are involved. Nevertheless she spent an hour last night collecting them up but even now I’m not sure she has them all π
It’s a far cry from the so-called library at my school back in the 1960’s. Despite being a ‘Grammar’ school and therefore (you’d think) be one of the towns best resourced centres of learning the library was a joke.
In reality I suppose I shouldn’t be complaining. The country was only just beginning to pull itself together post-war and the explosive return to prosperity had only just begun. In fact it must be said that even the town library was a fairly sorry affair with *far* less books than the library at the daughters school.
The school library is pretty big for what it is. Until recently it was larger by far than the library at the nearest large town. It has two floors and a mezzanine filled with computers. I wish I’d had access to that sort of resource when I was at school.
