I first organised a domain for myself back in 199?? The site was just 5 Mb shared space with mailserver.com and came with a useful little address. Soon enough we outgrew it and so I bought others. One of the first was http://www.talktidy.com which for years served as the abode of all my mail addresses.
Eventually I found google mail which provided 3 Gb of free online storage with a well executed spam filter. Once found… I opened something like 12 or more gmail accounts and find it all really useful. Now, even hotmail has 2Gb storage available and has a new excellant interface… very nice.
Things is… since the purpose of the domain was to serve mail… and that purpose has more or less gone… there’s no point in keeping the domain… is there?
Moving on. After my initial foray into domain ownership… well renting… I was persuaded by a friend that Aussie Hosts was the place to be. They were reliable and friendly and with reasonably priced plans… so to them I went. Over the years I opened 7 or more domains with them and populated the sites as I felt suited them. Then I got a bit bored with web development and so the sites pretty much fell by the wayside too… *but*… I still kept them on and still kept the space open with Aussie Hosts.
Eventually Aussie Hosts was taken over and merged with another company (McGooHQ) to become Aussie HQ… and the prices immediately started to rise.
I’ve let it slide for far too long so that when I looked at the paid invoices they total around $1700. This is crazy for the amount of space I’ve rented. I get 50 Gigabytes with another host for around $50 a month! At that rate I’d have been able to host all the sites I have for three years for the same costs!
The time has come to bit the bullet and ask the techs at the new host to move all the domains from Aussie. They’ll charge of course but I doubt it’d be $1700… and from then on costs would decrease massively.
The time has come to go get a quote… and move. 😦
