The Shrub makes a funny.

Madge is visiting the US and as usual the Shrub found it impossible to avoid putting his foot in his mouth.

In his welcome, he almost told the crowd Madge had been in the US when it was founded in 1776 instead of dropping in for a free meal in 1976 for the bicentennial celebrations. 🙂

When the Shrub looked over at her she appeared ‘not amused’… and he ‘saved the day’ by saying she’d given him the kind of look only a mother could give her child.

The Shrub with Madge

Now for him this was a brilliant response… but likewise for him it was entirely out of character… especially bearing in mind the context of the comment. Think about it… the original US colonies were the ‘child’ of the UK… ? Seems a bit too pat for me for it to be entirely off the cuff.

I think it was a quite deliberate error which he could then exploit with a ‘funny’ response.

Am I cynical or what?? 😀

Edit:

Seems I might have been a tad cynical… assuming this story is on the level. Reports are telling us that at an official dinner where she was giving a toast, Madge is supposed to have opened with said “I wondered whether I should start this toast by saying, ‘When I was here in 1776 … ” 🙂

The Shrub is said to have responded… “Your Majesty, I can’t top that one.” Fair enough… maybe Madge did get her own back… or maybe she just has good scriptwriters as well??
