Google maps

Just been looking at a few places I know on Google Maps… like my own house of course πŸ™‚

It’s a great improvement on what it was originally, helped by both my computer and internet connection haveing improved. In the recent past it took ages for pages to render and even then quality was ‘fuzzy’ to say the least. The lack of links between map and satellite picture meant we were unable (then) to enter a specific address. The result was that when we tried it out the wife and I took hours following road links from a known location until we found our house and even then it took overnight for the page to complete its download.

In fact it took *so* long we gave up looking for anyone or anything else.

Now though it’s *very* fast and responsive… plus it has both map and satellite picture… and often a hybrid with road names superimposed on the picture. Of course these are not the most up-to-date images. My house, for example, is shown from at least three years ago and there is no sign whatever of the local billion dollar shopping centre that will be opening next year.

Apart from’immediacy’, another thing that *is* lacking is the ‘perspective’ shot which lets you see the area as if at an angle. I’ve seen these shots so know they’re available and they gives an entirely different ‘slant’ on the image.Still… for free this is damn good!
