I used to love ‘Jeannie’. She was set up in direct opposition to that other witch ‘Samantha’ of Bewitched, but whilst Sam played the ideal almost obedient housewife, to a totally inadequate male, there was something special about Jeannie – and I don’t mean that idiot Larry Hagman who played her ‘master’. Maybe it was her constant rebellious nature and playful spirit. Or maybe those skimpy outfits and push-up bras?
The fact she was so special can be put down entirely to the brilliance of Sydney Sheldon who died yesterday aged 89.
I’m not sure he’d appreciate being remembered solely for that one TV series, he was after all an accomplished playright, author and producer winning an Oscar a Tony and a host of other awards, not to mention selling around 300 million books.
Still, it is Jeannie I most fondly remember… Barbara Eden was perfect for the role and in it, but it was his production and he kept tight control over it. He, and she, will be missed.
