John Howard has come down in favour of throwing caution to the wind, and is reccomending atomic power as the fuel of choice in the country that has most to gain from solar energy and least to gain from nuclear power plants.
The sheer insanity of this decision is hard to comprehend. We have abundant accessible energy here already. All we need is the research dollars to make it as cheap as other fuels. Wind power is also a possibility! Australia has vast virtually unpopulated areas where the wind turbines could be sited. We have constant sunchine which could be used to power solar collectors, steam turbines, solar fuel cells and the like.
We have *no* need to have any power stations. We have one of course… just outside Sydney… and a prime target it already is for terrorists. It’s supposed to be a ‘research centre’ and we need no more.
All I can say is thank God the Libs will be thrown out at the next election. I don’t care if their economic management is the best in the world… if we build nuclear power stations pretty soon there won’t be a world to be the best *in*!!
