As the old rhyme goes…
When I was young and in my prime
I used to do it all the time
But now that I am old and grey…
… I only manage twice a day.
Of course this has nothing to do with the story and neither claim is true other than in my imagination.
However… he says moving along quickly… once upon a time I lived in Cardiff, capital city of Old South Wales. As was my wont in my youth I regularly left my domicile for evenings of riotous entertainment with my friends… which usually translated to sitting around in bars working out which of the females was drink enough to take an interest… not that any did!! 🙂
Now and then though we occasionally visited sensible places such as the local cinemas, dance halls and the like. On one such occasion… as we tediously turn to the subject of the post… my frinds and I decided we’d go see the Everley Brothers who were appearing at the Gaumont (as it then was) in Queen Street.
We front up to the box office and make the request only to learn they were sold out. Oh dear. So… the girl behind the till says “But we *do* still have seats left for Conway Twitty!”.
Stunned silence.
Then I say… you’re joking aren’t you? And a 10 minute conversation ensued as she tried to convince me this guy really was an yankee pop star and this wasn’t some sort of send up. Still… eventually we we declined and wandered off in search of better known activities… i.e. the Rummer Tavern opposite Cardiff Castle where we drank Bass and laughed a lot.

Which leads us at last to what brought on this ramble… I was on my way home and heard “Mona Lisa” sung my Mr Conway Twitty!! Sadly I never did get to the Everley Brothers… nor did I ever get to see Mr Twitty play or sing… but on the basis of that offering I’m think maybe I didn’t really miss much!
