I’m back on about Bindi Irwin again 🙂 She’s had an interview (Daddy wouldn’t want me to cry) published in which she describes approaching Xmas without her dad, Crocodile Hunter, Steve.
She’s just another little kid who’s life has been damaged by tragedy in a world where untold millions suffer equal and even worse traumas yet this one is so articulate, and has such great access to the media that she can act as a focus for all those others… if only people can and/or will extrapolate from her relatively safe situation to those others whose very lives are in jeopardy.
Despite the fact she is cocooned by wealth and the love of people who care for her wellbeing, it’s still evident from the interview how much she’s hurting. Maybe the best she can say about her situation is that at least she isn’t in Iraq or Darfur.
Still… as Xmas approaches and we dive into the shopping and feeding feenzy, it’s good to remember there are people out there suffering. If it helps to focus our compassion, then perhaps a few of us might divert some portion of our excess towards them.
