Same old, same old. Another 150+ martyrs die in the cause of freedom ‘George Bush style’ as suicide bombings wrack… or wreck… Sadr City, in Bagdahd. Yet again the forces of freedaom were helpless to prevent the sectarian violence that is tearing the country apart.
I still occasionally wonder how many of those millions killed or maimed, or have otherwise had their lives ruined by the ‘liberation’ of Iraq are now looking back on the days of the dictator as a golden age.
The lesson taught by the invasion and the half-hearted attempt to impose democracy is a hard one. The results of both this debacle, and the ongoing (but all bar ignored) war in Afghanistan have to be learned by the West. If not, in place of relatively controllable despots, the world will be run by fundamentalist religicos who owe their allegience not to the living but to some nebulous and mostly inaccessible supernatural being.
As much as we need to instill democracy at grass roots level… even more than that we need to instill a love of education and encourage freedom of the mind. Freeing the body is to no purpose if the mind is still enslaved by superstition and ignorance.
