Part of the pleasure of the Ashes cricket test series over here is watching and listening to the ‘Barny Army’ that follows the English side around from game to game. The ‘Mexican Wave’ and the bugle calls add to the gentle pleasures for the crowd and relieve what can after all be occasionally… how can I put this… boring(?) proceedings of the game?

However… the fun police cracked down yesterday and not only expelled the UK bugle boy Bill Cooper for playing… but threw out people who were charged with spoiling other peoples enjoyment… i.e. trying to start a wave!
This is getting altogether too serious… let’s remember this is a game which needs to be watched and enjoyed… and the spectator sport *is* a part of the game!! One of the reasons cricket has survived is because it regained its sense of fun. It’d be a real shame for it to return to the doldrums and shadows of the past.
C’mon guys… lighten up. The occasional bugle call and wave *adds* to the fun not detracts from it.
