I’ve written about the plight of David Hicks many times but I am still appalled by the shameful way he has been abandoned to the vagaries of a corrupt political system by a government supposedly elected to serve its people.
He was been held illegally by the USA in conditions that would be totally illegal in this country and is intended to be subject to a legal system created with the sole purpose of finding him guilty… of something. I repeat now what I have said many times. If he has broken no Australian law our government is honour bound to do its utmost to get him out of USA hands.
David Hicks is rapidly becoming a cause celebre around the world as more and more people find themselves disgusted with the way he has been treated. Held by a so-called ally *without charge* or access to a meaningful judicial procees, denied any rights as a prisoner of war… or as a civilian combatant… for five years, under conditions described as ‘torture’ by the Red Cross… it is indeed shameful that the government of Australia has not done for its citizens what other allies of the USA have done and get their citizens home!!
