I love sausages… well made ones anyway. I like the UK varieties… mostly… and would eschew the ‘european’ version for an old fashioned porker anytime.
There is something peculiarly ‘British’ about a plate of sausages. mashed potatoes, processed peas… and onion gravy. Can’t seem to find it anywhere else in the world unless the ‘somewhere else’ has a large population of british born residents… transient or otherwise.
On a theme… did you know the slang word for suasages… i.e. ‘banger’… which the English throw about with gay abandon, only came into use relatively recently?? Meat was strictly rationed during World War Two and filling for sausages was hard to come by… even allowing for the fact that anything remotely sourced from an animal was fair game… so to speak.
The result was that the ‘meat’ that was used was liberally mixed with various wheat based ingredients… ok bread… which was then soaked in water. When cooked… the water of course expanded to steam… and burst explosively out of the skin. You live and learn eh??
