Well if you like fish with your chips I’d suggest you make the most of it while you can. Dire warnings are being made that fish stocks will have collapsed as soon as 2048 and commercial fishing as we know it will cease.
Pollution habitat destruction, global warming… and insane wasteful fishing methods are all to blame. Is it possible to reverse the trend? Probably buit it would need a level of international cooperation unheard of til now.
If we can’t even persuade a rich nation like the Japanese to cease whaling… if we can’t persuade the USA and Australia to sign Kyoto, can’t persuade the Canadians to stop culling seals… can’t stop the practice of feeding fish meal to cattle… how we could expect poorer nations to pull back on their fishing and other maritime industries? Answer we can’t.
Basically it’s goodbye fish… and when the fish have gone… will we be next??
Back here in the UK things are changing slowly but surely. In decent shops such as Waitrose (a supermarket chain co-operatively owned by all the employees) practically all of the non-farmed fish they sell is line caught. This avoids the criminal waste of non-quota fish you get from trawling.
The future probably lies with fish farming. We just have to stay vigilant that the fish farms don’t go the way of the poultry industry!
