Remember the song about the spider in the dunny?

There are tales galore about spiders biting peoples backsides when they used the old outdoor dunnies. Sort of made sense in their way. The old earth latrines attracted flies… so were a good source of food for spiders… so they made their webs where the food comes from… well you get the drift.

Today we heard of the death of Glenn “Shorty” Butler who died after spending several days on life support at Alice Springs Hospital.

He was found in his outhouse by family members who thought he’d had a heart attack but it turns out he’d been bitten on the foot by a brown snake.

Seems brown snakes are *very* common up there and the bite whilst usually fatal within an hour is virtually painless… so he may well not even have known he’d been bitten!

All we need now is a song…
