Maher Arar is a Canadian though he was born in Syria . In 2002 he stopped at New York en route to Canada after a trip to Tunisia but never got home. Instead he was hauled aaway by the ‘Homeland Security’ forces and deported to Syria where he was tortured for a year before his release and return to Canada was organised.

The USA of course says it isn’t responsible for the error and blames the Canadian authorities for providing them with faulty intelligence… errr… yeah.
Anyway, Mr Arar has been invited to Washington to be presented with a Human Rights prize by Vanessa Redgrave but has decided not to go. While he applauds the Americans adherence to democratic values, he is concerned they will arrest him again and is unwilling to take the chance. Can hardly blame him.
