Death is freedom…

So, up to three quarters of a million Iraqis have died since the Americans invaded their country in 2003. Since the idea was to liberate them… one can only imagine the joy with which they met their deaths.

The US military is of course disputing the figures, because they include ‘natural deaths and deaths from ordinary crime’. This of course is totally missing the point which is simply that people have died who might well *not* have died just because the US invaded.

Map of Iraq

The population had already had its health wrecked by the ongoing sanctions and the invasion simply exacerbated an already critical situation. Even before the war their mortality rate was 5.5 per 1000… but now its risen to 19.8 per 1000 for the year ending in June – and the political situation has deteriorated still further since then.

No idea where I’m going with this except that there needs to be more effort made to return the country to ‘normality’ (whatever that might be over there) sooner than later
