Al Qaeda was planning to wipe out the entire 2005 Ashes team in the UK with Saron gas… or so we’re told.
I’ve heard some bizarre tales of potential terrorist threats but this is one of the strangest. What’s more the attack was apparantly foiled by a cricket loving terrorist who persuaded the others to abandon it… err yeah I can believe that. After all who *wouldn’t* defer their suicide to watch Australia lose a test match.
I think this is stetching credibility a bit far… but still shows just why strong security is needed even for the most innocuous of social get togethers. I doubt the fate of the free world rests on the shoulders a few cricketers, and yet the potential is there – which of course what ‘terror’ is all about, social disruption.
